Grupo Silvio Santos is a diversified conglomerate created and controlled by Silvio Santos, a former street peddler who transformed himself into one of the Brazil's richest tycoons. The group is formed around a chain of linked businesses, all originally spawned by Tele Sena, a hugely successful televised lottery show created and hosted by Santos himself. The success of the lottery allowed Santos not only to set up companies which could supply ever more lavish prizes to give away, but also to build his own personal broadcasting television network, SBT, now the country's #2 broadcaster.
