Tchibo (Germany)

A household name in Germany, Tchibo is best-known for its coffee, the country's best-selling fresh roast brand. It also operates a large retail division selling consumer lifestyle products from clothing to computers. Controlled by the wealthy Herz family, its Reemtsma subsidiary was also for many years the country's dominant tobacco company. Tchibo sold that business in 2002 and used the resulting cash to acquire full control of Beiersdorf, makers of international skincare brand Nivea. Advertising Age estimated global measured advertising expenditure by Tchibo/Beiersdorf of $859m in 2006, making it the world's #34 advertiser.
