Telecom is Europe's second-biggest telecoms group. In 1999 and
2000, the company had expansion on its mind, establishing footholds in other European territories, not least the UK,
where it snapped up ISP Freeserve and mobile service Orange,
which has gradually become the umbrella for all its wireless and online
operations. However, France Telecom's shopping spree brought with it
substantial debts, which had risen to E70bn by 2002. That year the group almost outdid Vivendi
for record corporate losses as it wrote off the value of several failed
investments. Since then a new management team has restored the group's fortunes
and begun the slow process of reducing its debt mountain. Advertising Age estimated global measured advertising expenditure of
$730m in 2006, making France Telecom the world's #42 advertiser. Click here
