Sanofi-Aventis (France)

Sanofi-Aventis is currently the world's #4 drug company, but the market leader in Europe. It was formed in 2004 from the hostile takeover of French pharmaceutical giant Aventis by smaller rival Sanofi-Synthelabo. A key factor in the takeover was the controversial role played by the French government which successfully steered Aventis away from a merger with Swiss-based Novartis in order to create a national champion that would compete more effectively with Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline. In 2007, the group was reported to have commenced merger talks with Bristol-Myers Squibb, which has US rights to Sanofi-Aventis's Plavix drug. No deal has yet materialised. Advertising Age estimated global measured advertising expenditure of $318m in 2007, making Sanofi-Aventis the world's #98 advertiser.
