Esprit International


Esprit is one of the world's most
widely spread
fashion brands, as well as being among the most valuable. Few other
clothing businesses can boast such a cosmopolitan heritage. Founded in the
US in the late 1960s, it became closely associated with avant-garde
Italian design in the 1980s, but is now headquartered in Hong Kong (though
registered in Bermuda), and does
the largest proportion of its business by far in Germany. In its heyday in
the US in the 1980s it was a pioneer in casual affordable sportswear
before being overtaken by the likes of The Gap
and Abercrombie & Fitch. More recently, the struggling US business has been eclipsed by its fast-growing
European and Asian operations, prompting the group to withdraw from North America in 2011. Esprit now sells in
around 25 countries around the globe through a network of more than 12,000 wholly-owned or wholesale outlets.
