Hakuhodo
is Japan's number two agency behind Dentsu,
operating regional offices
throughout Japan, as well as a network of subsidiary specialist agencies and other
marketing services businesses covering just about every discipline. Until 2002 the company trailed behind its larger rival, less than half
Dentsu's size. That year Hakuhodo engineered a merger with two other Japanese agencies, Daiko
and Yomiko,
to create a multi-brand marketing services group in the style of Omnicom or WPP,
narrowing the gap a little with the mighty Dentsu. Hakuhodo has also added to its international profile with a series of acquisitions of
small creative agencies in major advertising territories. Advertising Age ranked Hakuhodo
DY as the
#8 ad organisation worldwide in 2008 with revenues of around $1.6bn.
