Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (Japan)

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group is Japan's biggest bank by some margin, as well as the world's biggest financial institution by asset value. It is a key component of the Mitsubishi keiretsu, Japan's foremost business organisation. After months of drawn-out negotiations, the current group was formed in October 2005 from the merger of two of the country's big four banks, Mitsubishi Tokyo and UFJ. The two companies' respective subsidiaries have for the most part been merged. Like many American and other Japanese banks, MUFG's finances were badly dented by the subprime credit squeeze. However it was able to take advantage of that crisis to secure an important alliance with US investment banking giant Morgan Stanley.
