Polygram (Netherlands)

Philips' decision to sell its 75% stake in Polygram in May 1998 resulted in the transfer in ownership of the world's biggest record company from Europe to the Americas. Canada's Seagram was the winning bidder, out-manoeuvring rival buyouts with a deal for $10.4bn, making this what was then the third biggest entertainment deal after Disney's purchase of Capital Cities/ABC and the Time Warner merger. The music company was merged with Seagram's existing Universal to form Universal Music. Click here for the Adbrands.net profile (subscribers only); or subscribe to Adbrands.net here.
