The Carphone Warehouse | Talk Talk (UK)

The Carphone Warehouse is Europe's leading independent retailer of mobile phones and services, with almost 2,500 stores in nine countries. Outlets outside the UK and Ireland trade as Phone House. The group expanded rapidly during the early 2000s, developing telephone and broadband services in several of its major markets including Spain and Italy. In the UK in particular it became a significant rival to local leader BT. As a result, the company was split in two in several stages between 2008 and 2010. The retail operations of Carphone Warehouse were transferred into a newly created joint venture co-owned by US electronics giant Best Buy, while the telecoms and broadband operations were demerged in 2010 as Talk Talk Group. Legally, the two companies are entirely separate, although they maintain close links, not least through founder Charles Dunstone, still chairman of both. In 2013, Best Buy withdrew from the Carphone Warehouse venture altogether, selling its shares back to its British partner.
