Centrica is the company which operates the commercial activities of British Gas, as well as other household and business services. Created in 1997 from the break-up of the old British Gas Corporation, Centrica was quick to exploit its new freedom, adding a string of other activities to its portfolio, including motoring services (through The Automobile Association), consumer finance and telecoms. More recently the group has focused more tightly on its core industry, selling off peripheral businesses in order to build its presence in the energy and home services markets.
