EMI Group (UK)

EMI Group has long been Britain's biggest music company, with an international profile secured by its position as the traditional home of several of the country's biggest groups including The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Queen. It operates primarily under the Virgin and Capitol Records labels. For many years EMI was part of one of the country's largest businesses, with interests in retail, film and even electronics. Restructured during the late 1980s to concentrate on music, it enjoyed a run of success until management problems and falling record sales pushed it into a frustrating and fruitless search for a bigger partner. Mammoth mergers, first with Warner Music, then with BMG, were abandoned when the companies involved failed to agree terms that would also appease monopoly regulators. Two further attempts to capture Warner in 2003 and 2006 were also unsuccessful. At the end of 2006, EMI was said to be close to a deal to be acquired by private equity investors but those talks too seemed to fizzle out. A deal was finally agreed in 2007, leading to a painful restructuring at the end of the year. However a series of further problems have ensued as the company struggles to improve performance and reduce its mountainous debts.
