Gallaher / Japan Tobacco
International

Cigarette manufacturer Gallaher
Group is an important player in the UK, top dog in the full-price
tobacco market thanks to its two
leading brands Benson & Hedges
and Silk Cut which share more than half
of the premium cigarette sector, and sister brands including Hamlet, Condor and Old
Holborn. US-owned until 1997, Gallaher won its independence that year, and
subsequently expanded into Russia, Austria and Sweden. But it remained a
minor player on the global stage, dominated by much bigger rivals such as British
American Tobacco and Philip
Morris. In 2006, Gallaher was acquired by Japan
Tobacco in what was then the biggest ever foreign takeover by a Japanese firm.
Gallaher's various subsidiaries were absorbed into the Japan Tobacco
International
portfolio, which also markets the Camel and Winston cigarettes in all
countries except the US. Click here for the Adbrands.net
