JD Williams is one of the UK's leading direct home shopping companies, with over 4m active customers. Until recently, the company tended to specialise in the mature or size 20-plus markets, leaving younger fashion to rivals such as Shop Direct. Since the mid-2000s, though, it too has moved aggressively into the 30-45 age market, signing up celebrities to design or endorse signature clothing lines. At the same time the group has refined its portfolio of more than 40 separate brands to focus on just three main online shopping brands: JD Williams (still aimed primarily at over-50s), and the younger Simply Be and Jacamo, which together account for just over half of group sales. Several more brands are still sold by mail order catalogue. The group acquired plus-size menswear retail chain High & Mighty in 2010 and has launched a small number of high street outlets selling the Simply Be and Jacamo brands. The group operates mainly in the UK but is beginning to establish a presence in the US. It was originally established in 1859 by Manchester stallholder James Williams, but the Williams family's interests were acquired in the 1960s by ragtrade entrepreneurs David and Nigel Alliance, still the controlling shareholders in publicly quoted parent N Brown Group. Revenues for the year to Feb 2016 were 866m. Angela Spindler is chief executive.
