Orange is the global personal communications subsidiary of France
Telecom, comprising that group's wireless and online activities. Unlike its main rivals, Orange also has a comparatively
clean international footprint, concentrated entirely in Europe, although it lacks presence in such key markets as Germany and
Italy. Its stylish brand personality, first developed in the mid-1990s, has served it well. After starting life as the UK's
fourth mobile telecoms provider, the company was catapulted into the global market when a series of telecoms giants fought to add
the company's distinctive and unusual branding to their own portfolios. Orange was captured first by German giant Mannesman in
1999, before the hunter was itself gobbled up by Vodafone. Orange was sold on to
France Telecom, which has gradually established the brand as the umbrella for its entire global portfolio of personal
communications services. More than a decade after its creation it remains arguably the industry's most distinctive global
brand, and it is increasingly becoming the flagship for France Telecom's full range of services. In 2006, the Orange brand was
expanded to include the group's internet and business communications divisions, and it is gradually taking over from the France
Telecom brand as the badge for the group's fixed line services, even in its domestic market. The group has mobile interests
in 17 countries, but its four key territories are France, the UK, Spain and Poland. In 2010, it merged its operations in the
UK with those of rival T-Mobile to create a new local market leader.
