Scottish & Newcastle (UK)

Previously the UK's leading brewer, Scottish & Newcastle ceased to exist in May 2008 following acceptance of a break-up bid by Carlsberg and Heineken. The company had featured for many years high on the list of potential takeover targets in the rapidly consolidating beer market. Carlsberg will take full control of Baltic Beverages, Russia's leading brewer, as well as S&N's French subsidiary Kronenbourg and its operations in Greece and China. Heineken will assume control of S&N's core UK operations - where its market-leading beers include Foster's and John Smith's - as well as interests in Portugal, Finland and India.
