Clairol: Brand Profile

Clairol is one of the world's leading hair care brands, known internationally for hair colouring products such as Nice'n Easy, Miss Clairol, Loving Care and Ultress. Once the global #1 in this market, it lost its crown to L'Oreal at the end of the 1990s, but has spent the past decade fighting back, with mixed results. In 2001 Procter & Gamble paid just under $5bn to acquire the business from Bristol-Myers Squibb. At the time, it was the biggest ever acquisition for P&G, but gave the American company an important foothold in the hair colouring sector, broadening its international rivalry with L'Oreal. However, P&G has not been able to reverse a slow decline in sales of the brand.
