Clairol is one of the world's leading hair care
brands, known internationally for hair colouring products such as Nice'n Easy, Miss Clairol, Loving Care and Ultress. Once
the global #1 in this market, it lost its crown to L'Oreal at the end of the 1990s,
but has spent the past decade fighting back, with mixed results. In 2001 Procter & Gamble
paid just under $5bn to acquire the business from Bristol-Myers Squibb. At
the time, it was the biggest ever acquisition for P&G, but gave the American company an important foothold in the hair
colouring sector, broadening its international rivalry with L'Oreal. However, P&G has not been able to reverse a slow
decline in sales of the brand.
