DreamWorks
Animation is the computer generated (or CG) movie studio best-known for its Shrek series.
It was spun out in an IPO from so-called "mini-major" movie studio DreamWorks SKG in 2004.
That business launched with a fanfare
ten years earlier, founded by three of the most
celebrated names in the entertainment industry, director Steven Spielberg,
former Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg and music impresario David
Geffen. After a difficult start, the company finally established itself as a
force to be reckoned with in 2001, as a result of the worldwide success of
animated fairytale Shrek. It consolidated that position with Shrek
2. However the studio's live-action releases performed inconsistently.
DreamWorks Animation floated in 2004. The
live-action business was sold to Viacom a
year later, but is set to re-establish its independence at the beginning of
