Edelman is the world's biggest public relations agency, and arguably also the most widely admired. Still owned and run by its founding family in a sector dominated by subsidiaries of multinational marketing groups, it has swept the board in recent years for industry accolades, named Agency of the Year by multiple trade publications and organisations and as Agency of the Decade by Ad Age and industry monitor The Homes Report. Although originally known mainly for consumer and healthcare PR, it has established a much envied reputation for excellence in corporate PR and public affairs since 2000, and was one of the pioneers in word-of-mouth marketing and social media. Although the US is still its core market, it has also established an expansive global network since the end of the 1990s, becoming one of the leading agencies in Europe and the Asia Pacific region. Parent company Daniel J Edelman Inc also owns several other smaller PR and consultancy agencies including Zeno and Matter. Founder Daniel Edelman was chairman right up until his death in January 2013, aged 92. His son Richard Edelman is president & CEO. Group revenues for the year to June 2013 were $734m. The Holmes Report has ranked Edelman as the global #1 PR agency every year since 2010. Adbrands Weekly Update 17th Oct 2013: PR industry monitor The Holmes Report named Edelman as its PR Agency of the Year for 2013. Interpublic, owner of Weber Shandwick and GolinHarris, was the first recipient of a new Holding Company of the Year award.
Adbrands Weekly Update 15th Aug 2013: PR giant Edelman, the world #1 in its sector, reported results for the year to June 2013. Total revenues for holding company Daniel J Edelman Inc rose 13% to $774m. The main Edelman PR group reported revenues of $707m, while sister unit Zeno came in just under $30m. The US remains Edelman's biggest market, accounting for 60% of revenues, while EMEA added another 20%. CEO Richard Edelman stressed that the family owned group would not expand into other fields such as advertising. "Ultimately, our core businesses will be PR, digital and research because they are mutually supportive of each other." He said that the proposed Publicis Omnicom merger only strengthened his resolve to go "narrow and deep and do what we do well rather than replicate a $22bn holding company and stretch ourselves too thin".
Adbrands Weekly Update 25th Jul 2013: Market watcher The Holmes Report published its latest annual ranking of the world's biggest PR companies. Privately owned Edelman continues to lead the field with fee income of almost $666m in 2012. That widens its lead over second-placed Weber Shandwick, with an estimated $628m. Strongest performance among the major networks came from MSL Group (at #4) and Ketchum (#6), with income growth estimated at 11% and 14% respectively. Similar performance in 2013 would push Publicis-owned MSL into 3rd place ahead of current incumbent FleishmanHillard.
