Undoubtedly the most important recent development for computer manufacturer Apple
has been the introduction of the iPod in 2001. That device, the natural
successor to Sony's 1980s blockbuster Walkman, quickly established itself as the undisputed must-have technology gadget for the
first half of of the 2000s. In the process it re-established Apple as arguably the world's coolest technology company, and opened
up an immensely valuable new presence for the group in the wider consumer electronics market. That status was consolidated by the
introduction of iPhone, the most desirable technology toy for the second half of the decade. Its successor, the iPad tablet
computer, is likely to take up a similar role for the first half of the 2010s. In 2010, iPhone became the group's single most valuable product for the first time. By 2012, it accounted for more than half of group revenues.
