Nabisco and Lu are the umbrella names for Kraft's
cookies and crackers businesses in North America and Europe respectively. Together they make Kraft the world's largest such
manufacturer, with brands which include American favourites Oreos, Chips Ahoy and Ritz, and European delicacies including Petit
Beurre, Mikado and Prince. Nabisco is now just another subsidiary of food giant Kraft, but for several years in the 1980s and
1990s it was one of the two main arms of diversified conglomerate RJR Nabisco. That company made corporate history in 1988 as the
target of the biggest ever leveraged buyout, a deal which set the tone for the greed mentality of the decade. For many years,
Nabisco's operations were confined mainly to North America, until the acquisition in 2007 of Lu, previously Nabisco's main rival
in Europe.
