Pharmacia Corporation (US)

Pharmacia is in the process of being merged into drug giant Pfizer. Once complete, the resulting business will be the world's biggest drug company by quite a margin. The key factor in the deal is blockbuster arthritis drug Celebrex, originally developed by Pharmacia, but marketed by Pfizer, who are keen to take full control of the product, as well as the smaller company's pipeline of other new pharmaceuticals. Pharmacia Corporation is itself the result of a series of past mergers, notably the combination in 2000 of the business formerly known as Pharmacia & Upjohn with US crop protection giant Monsanto and its pharmaceutical arm, Searle. (Advertising Age estimated a 2001 worldwide ad spend of $392m, making the company the world's #57 advertiser).
