Random House (US)

Random House is the world's largest book publishing group. It is wholly owned by German media group Bertelsmann, and is that company most significant subsidiary in the US. Its fortunes have been boosted substantially in recent years by the phenomenal success of author Dan Brown. The business has been assembled through a series of acquisitions of regional publishers snapped up by Bertelsmann or the original Random House since the late 1970s including Doubleday in the US, and Chatto & Windus, Jonathan Cape and Ebury Press. The current group was formed in 1998 by the purchase of Random House by Bertelsmann and its merger with the German group's existing publishing arm, Bantam Doubleday Dell.
