Saturn vehicles: Brand Profile (US)

Saturn was one of General Motors' more unconventional automobile sub-brands. It was launched during the fuel shortages of the 1980s as an experimental project, designed to offer an American-made alternative to cheap-to-run Japanese imports. The brand quickly attracted a loyal following among customers, but GM was slow to build upon its initial success. Saturn suffered from that inattention until the mid 2000s, when a rash of new models were introduced. However, reinvention of the brand was overtaken by more serious problems across the auto industry as a whole. Saturn was one of four brands identified by GM for sale or closure at the end of 2008, but no deal was agreed until June 2009, by which time GM itself had already filed for bankruptcy. The Saturn brand is to be rescued by dealership group Penske Automotive.
