The local outpost of Saatchi & Saatchi is one of Australia's best-known creative agencies. In fact, trade magazine Creative Brief named it Australia's Agency of the Decade in 2009, the sort of accolade that's always guaranteed to prompt a subsequent decline in performance. So it was with Sydney-based Saatchi, whose stability slipped significantly over the following couple of years with the loss of several important accounts. A new management team was appointed at the end of 2011, led by Michael Rebelo, an Australian who had spent several years in the agency's London office. Gradually, Saatchi has regained much of its earlier poise. In 2015, the agency re-established a presence in Melbourne for the first time in over a decade; the following year it acquired widely respected local sales promotion agency MercerBell. There is also an office in Adelaide. In early 2017, Rebelo took on an additional role as CEO of Publicis Communications Australia & New Zealand, the umbrella for all the group's creative agencies in that region. He was succeeded as Saatchi Australia CEO by Anthony Gregorio, ex Havas. Mike Spirkovski is chief creative officer. In New Zealand, Paul Wilson is managing director with Steve Cochran as CCO. In 2020, MercerBell merged with the local outpost of Publicis Groupe's performance marketing network Performics to form Performics Mercerbell. Later the same year, staff and clients from Marcel Australia - itself the former Publicis office in Sydney - were also absorbed into Saatchi's and the Marcel brand abandoned. Adbrands Daily Update 24th Nov 2020: "An Unbreakable Bond". Kiwis really are a breed apart. New Zealand's spectacular wide open spaces have somehow inspired a quirky dry sense of humour that doesn't quite exist anywhere else. Needless to say, in such a landscape, Toyota's rugged Hilux pickup is one of the top-selling vehicles. Now Saatchi & Saatchi NZ is celebrating the unbreakable bond between Kiwis and their Hilux, as well as their oddball spirit, with a set of character-rich films in which a group of drivers just happen to congregate in the middle of nowhere to shoot the breeze. "Pants are just long-sleeved shorts", "Cheese is really just a loaf of milk", and other words of wisdom.
Adbrands Daily Update 18th Nov 2020: Publicis Groupe continued to streamline its global agency portfolio with the elimination of the Australian outpost of Marcel, which was itself previously Publicis Sydney. Most of Marcel's staff and its clients are being absorbed into Saatchi & Saatchi Australia; but local managing director Ryan Bernal has left the Groupe. Saatchi said the merger was "designed to strengthen operational capabilities for Marcel clients".
Adbrands Daily Update 17th Aug 2020: "Fibre. It's How We Internet Now". Saatchi & Saatchi's New Zealand outpost get the week off to a good start with a funny campaign for local internet provider Chorus. Poor Carl is suffering from bad internet, and it's ruining his day in a hundred different ways. All those different aspects of slow connections with which you and I are no doubt already familiar - including interminable load-times, pixellation and constant buffering - are deployed here in a series of great sight-gags. Lots of fun.
Adbrands Weekly Update 5th May 2016: Ads of the Week "Being A Kid Never Changes". Here's a lovely new campaign from Saatchi & Saatchi Australia for Mondelez' Natural Confectionery Company candy brand, drawing parallels between your own nostalgia-tinted childhood and that of your kids. Clearly some things never do actually change. The resulting ad will leave a warm glow in your heart and an irresistible urge in your brain to go out and buy jelly snakes and wine gums.
Adbrands Weekly Update 24th Mar 2016: Ads Of The Week: "Superheroes". Been there, done that, got the burnt feet. (Jeez, not even Superman goes around barefoot on a hot day at the beach!). Saatchi & Saatchi ride the wave of excitement over Warner's Batman vs Superman movie with this funny spot for Toyota Australia, which manages to trade off a bit of the hype without paying the license fee.
