Boeheringer Ingelheim is a sizeable German pharmaceutical company, now one of the global top 20, with a growing presence in the US and other international markets. Its top-selling product is Spiriva, a treatment for pulmonary disease, with sales of €2.8bn in 2017, though performance is now in decline following patent expiry. Other key pharmaceutical brands include anticoagulant Pradaxa for high blood pressure (€1.5bn), and diabetes drugs Trajenta (€1.3bn) and Jardiance (€1.0bn). Until recently, the group also owned a significant OTC business, especially in Europe, with respiratory and gastrointestinal brands including Buscopan, Dulcolax and Mucosolvan and Pharmaton vitamins. In 2016, it agreed to transfer this business to Sanofi and paid an additional €4.7bn to acquire the latter's substantial animal healthcare division Merial. Combined with its existing operations in this sector (previously known as Fort Dodge Animal Health, acquired from Pfizer in 2009), Boehringer has become the world's second largest specialist in this market behind Zoetis. Brands include the widely used Nexgard and Frontline flea treatments for dogs and cats. The group reported worldwide revenues of €18.06bn in 2017. The company was founded in 1885 by Albert Boehringer to make tartaric acid, and later lactic acid. It began extracting alkaloids such as morphine in the early 1900s and launched its first proprietary drug, the opium derivative Laudanon in 1912. It is still privately owned and run by members of the family. Huburtus von Baumbach, great-grandson of the founder, became executive chairman in 2015. Christian Boehringer chairs the shareholders' committee, which also includes four other family members. Adbrands Weekly Update 7th July 2016: Sanofi agreed terms to transfer ownership of its animal health division Merial to German counterpart Boehringer Ingelheim, in return for the latter's OTC healthcare unit and €4.7bn in cash. Once that deal completes later this year, Boehringer will become the world's second largest animal health company behind Zoetis with sales of around €3.8bn. Sanofi's enlarged consumer healthcare division would have sales in excess of €4.9bn.

French pharma giant Sanofi and Germany's family-controlled Boehringer Ingelheim are reported to be in "exclusive negotiations" for a major potential asset swap. Sanofi is proposing the transfer of its animal health division Merial to its German rival to create a new #2 in that sector behind Zoetis. In return, it would receive €4.7bn in cash as well as Boehringer's consumer health division in all markets except China. The addition of products such as the laxative Dulcolax, Pharmaton vitamins and cough remedies Bisolvon and Mucosolvan, would boost Sanofi's OTC revenues to around €5.1bn, pushing it into the global #3 position behind GSK and Bayer.
