Asahi Advertising - known as Asako in its home market - is Japan's 9th biggest homegrown advertising agency by billings, part of the powerful Asahi Shimbun media group, whose various interests include leading commercial broadcaster TV Asahi as well as its namesake newspaper, the country's biggest by ad revenues. The agency counts Asahi Shimbun and affiliated Saison Group among its biggest clients, although both groups also use other agencies as well. Asahi Shimbun also has a significant interest in Daiko Advertising, now part of Hakuhodo DY. Facing declining revenues from its core newspaper market in 2001, Asahi Advertising reportedly proposed a partial merger with Daiko; the latter declined the offer but the two agencies agreed, along with rivals Hakuhodo and Yomiko, to pool their media buying interests in a bid to combat the might of Dentsu. In 2002, the alliance with Hakuhodo was strengthened further when Asahi agreed to commission the bigger agency to fulfill orders for media space. That business is now managed by Hakuhodo DY Partners. The two companies also cooperate on sports and other promotional events. Shu Ueda is president & CEO of Asahi Advertising.
