Edrington (UK)

Scotland's Edrington controls a small but important portfolio of Scotch whisky brands led by Famous Grouse and The Macallan. Impact estimated volumes of 3.1m cases for Grouse in 2016 and retail sales of $815m. It overtook Bell's in 2013 to become the top-selling whisky in the UK, at least in the take-home market. More recent acquisitions or launches include Brugal rum (2.9m cases in 2016), Snow Leopard super-premium vodka and Highland Park super-premium whisky. However, some smaller brands are being sold in 2018, including non-core blended whisky Cutty Sark. The group is co-owner with Beam Suntory of the distribution network previously known as Maxxium, but renamed in 2018 Edrington-Beam Suntory. As a result it has a reputation and influence greater than its size would suggest. Edrington's own combined volumes were 8.4m cases in the year ending Mar 2018. Total revenues were £707m. Ian Curle is chief executive. The group is privately owned by a charitable trust established by the descendants of William Robertson, who founded the original core of the business, later known as Highland Distillers, in the 1880s.
