Fitch is a leading international design consultancy, now owned by WPP. It offers a broad range of services, but Fitch is best-known for retail interior design. This discipline also differentiates it from the other two design groups in WPP's stable, Superunion and Landor, although it is increasingly closely linked to both, especially the former. At its peak in the 1970s and early 1980s, Fitch became arguably the world's most admired design agency, widely credited with changing the face of retail design as a result of the overhaul of a string of ageing British high street chains including Marks & Spencer, Boots, Tesco, Topshop, Asda, Debenhams, Woolworths and Ikea as well as Heathrow Airport's Terminal 4, BT, the Imperial War Museum and BP's London HQ. Fitch now operates 15 studios globally, including five in the US. It has an especially strong presence in the Middle East and Asia. Advertising Age estimated global revenues of $54m in 2017. David Blair is CEO. Most of the agency's international outposts were acquired during a period of rapid but comparatively uncoordinated expansion under different owners between 1999 and 2003. Founder Rodney Fitch studied under Terence Conran during the 1960s before buying out the old Conran Design Group in 1972 and relaunching it as Fitch & Co. However, after almost 20 years of stellar performance, the agency suffered serious financial problems in the recession of the early 1990s and passed through several different hands before being acquired by WPP in 2003. Fitch himself had departed the business a decade earlier. Martin Sorrell tempted him back to serve as the agency's figurehead until 2009. He died in 2014.
