John Ayling & Associates is one of the biggest of London's few remaining independent media agencies. It is also undoubtedly the oldest, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2018. It has been led since its inception by founder and executive chairman John Ayling. Longtime deputy Rob Stephens was appointed as CEO in 2014, but Ayling remains the majority owner. He started the business in 1978, after leaving what was then Garland Compton advertising following its takeover by Saatchi & Saatchi. Just over a decade later he was also one of the founding investors in what was then another indie start-up, PHD. Against the odds, John Ayling has been able to maintain its niche in the industry despite steady erosion of the independent sector, although it mainly handles smaller clients, including a large number of charities. Statutory accounts for 2017 declared billings of £65.8m, all of which was generated in the UK. Gross profit was £6.5m with a net profit of £1.5m.
