John Ayling & Associates is one of the biggest of London's few remaining independent media agencies. It is also undoubtedly the oldest, owned and led for almost 40 years by founder and executive chairman John Ayling. Longtime deputy Rob Stephens was appointed as CEO in 2014, but Ayling remains the majority owner. Ayling started the business in 1978, after leaving what was then Garland Compton Advertising following its takeover by Saatchi & Saatchi. Just over a decade later he was also one of the founding investors of another indie start-up, PHD. Against the odds, John Ayling has been able to maintain its niche in the industry despite steady erosion of the independent sector, although it mainly handles smaller clients and several charities. Nielsen (in Campaign) estimated billings of £57m in 2015, putting JAA just outside the Top 20 media shops. Statutory turnover for 2014 was £53m.
