The Mission is the umbrella for a small group of separately branded marketing agencies in the UK, mostly operating outside London. Its best-known subsidiary until recently was Devon-based Bray Leino, one of the country's biggest regional agencies. However, in 2018, the group added London creative agency Krow, one of the UK top 30. The Mission was founded in 2004 by Martin Banbury, previously chairman of integrated agency Communicator. He raised funding to begin a series of acquisitions, commencing with Leicester's Big Communications - now BigDog - in 2005. The group issued an IPO in 2006, and acquired Bray Leino the same year, followed by property specialist Think BDW, tech marketer AprilSix, intergated shop Story and others. Over-expansion led to significant financial difficulties and Banbury stepped down from the group. Bray Leino founder David Morgan, who had left the business following its acquisition, returned and is now executive chairman. Big Dog's James Clifton was promoted to group chief executive in Spring 2019. More recent acquisitions include entertainment marketing agency Mongoose and creative agency Chapter, acquired in 2015. All agencies retain their own separate branding but work closely together on accounts, pooling their respective expertise under what the group calls its "onemission" strategy. In 2018, the group introduced a new divisional structure, splitting its portfolio between integrated agencies (Bray Leino, Krow, BigDog etc) and specialist agencies (AprilSix, RLA, ThinkBDW etc). Billings reached a new high of £161m for 2018, with net revenues of £79m. Net income more than doubled to £9m as a result of a near-£3m profit on the sale of healthcare software developer BroadCare.
