The combined power of its five mass-market brands VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat and now Porsche makes Volkswagen Group the UK's biggest car company by quite some margin. The main VW brand overtook Vauxhall for the first time in 2017 to become the country's #2 marque behind Ford with sales of 208k passenger cars. It is also the #2 light commercial brand, though units of 41k are little more than a third of leader Ford. The group's other marques also performed well. Audi was the local #6 brand with 175k units (though behind both its main arch-rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz), while Skoda contributed 80k. Seat's sales jumped by almost a fifth to 56k units. A record 14k units for Porsche took the group's overall share of the local passenger car market to 21%, more than Ford and Vauxhall combined. Paul Willis is group managing director of the main business, handling the four main brands. Turnover for 2016 was £9.8bn, with net profit of £99m. Porsche still operates as a separate legal entity, and reported sales of an additional £753k. Volkswagen cars first began to be imported into the UK in significant numbers in 1953, though many cars were actually vandalised before they arrived on British shores as a result of lingering wartime prejudice. Gradually attitudes changed and by 1960, more than 16,000 units were being sold each year. However, sales of Volkswagen and later Audi as well were managed entirely in the UK by independent franchisees for 40 years. The local business wasn't finally acquired by Volkswagen AG until 1993. All vehicles are still imported from Germany. See also the full Adbrands profiles for Volkswagen Group, the VW brand and Audi.
