Selected Wickes advertising

Wickes is a leading home improvement and DIY retailer in the UK. It is one of three national retailers in this sector, with around 370 stores across the country. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, it was for a time one of the UK's most prominent advertisers, with a memorable catchphrase ("Wickes. It's got our name on it."), voiced by actor Timothy Spall. However, the account was moved in 2015, and a new strategy adopted. Though much smaller than main rivals B&Q and Homebase, Wickes has a greater focus on trade customers, and on the kitchen and bathroom market. Wickes' combined retail space was around half that of Homebase and a quarter of B&Q in 2015, but it is expanding as its rivals contract. It is the main retail brand of Travis Perkins, Britain's biggest building merchant and supplies group, which controls a number of other trade suppliers as well as consumer retail businesses Tile Giant and Toolstation. Wickes Building Supplies reported revenues of almost £1.3bn in 2017 (out of Travis Perkins' total of £6.4bn). Simon King is managing director of Wickes. In fact the Wickes brand was originally an import from the US, where the Wickes brothers founded a lumber business in the 1850s. It was launched in the UK for the first time in 1972, and bought out from its American owners in 2000, originally by another local DIY chain Focus. It was acquired by Travis Perkins in 2005.
