Mithun - as Campbell Mithun was renamed in 2014 - was one of America's larger regional agencies, headquartered in Minneapolis and sitting loosely within the Interpublic portfolio. Campbell Mithun had a long and storied background, but new business performance has been worryingly patchy in recent years, with the agency becoming overly reliant on a small collection of core clients. As a result, the main agency was increasingly overshadowed by its media division Compass Point. Interpublic finally pulled the plug in January 2016, dismissing top management, and merging Mithun and Compass Point to form a new Minneapolis outpost for its lead network McCann Worldgroup.

Adbrands Weekly Update 28th Jan 2016: Interpublic has effectively pulled the plug on storied standalone agency Campbell Mithun. Founded in 1933, it has been in steady decline for several years. CEO Rob Buchner and chief creative officer David Carter have departed, and Mithun's remaining staff and clients, as well as media unit Compass Point, are being merged and relaunched as McCann Minneapolis. A statement said "The rebranding formalizes the closer working relationship between McCann and Mithun that has evolved in connection with growth and integration of the shared General Mills business... The change will more efficiently align resources and leverage McCann Worldgroup's integrated creative and strategic capabilities across the US to deliver results for our clients."
