Empower MediaMarketing has evolved from being one of the last remaining independent media shops in the US to a full service unit offering creative services, especially in the digital sector, as well as traditional media. It operates only in North America, with claimed billings of $375m. Despite its small size, it was named as Media Agency of the Year for 2016 by trade source Mediapost because of its campaigning stance on media transparency, one of the industry's most serious issues, and one that larger networks have so far been much slower to tackle. EmPower promises its clients 100% transparency on where and how their money is spent. The shop was founded in 1985 in Cincinnati by former P&G executive Mary Beth Price under the name Media That Works. She was joined by husband Bill, also a marketer, a year later and the company grew steadily over the years. In 1999, as a result of the rapid consolidation of the US media agency industry, MTW added media strategy and promotions to its traditional buying and planning services, and relaunched under the new name of Empower. Mary Beth Price left the company in 1997, but remains a consultant director; Bill Price retired as chairman & CEO in 2010. Their son Jim Price is now CEO, and his experience as former head of the company's interactive division accelerated a move into digital services and search. In 2011, it acquired analytics company Market Intelligence Group to strengthen its existing inhouse resources, followed by digital marketing agency Powerhouse Factories a year later. There are also offices in New York and Chicago to support the original Cincinnati HQ.
