Liberty Mutual is now America's third largest property and casualty insurer, sitting just behind Geico/Berkshire Hathaway. It manages a wider range of cover than some rivals, offering life, business and workers' compensation insurance, as well as more traditional private home and auto. It is the country's #3 home insurer, #5 in commercial auto and #6 in private auto. It also has a small but growing international footprint, with a direct presence in 18 international markets in China, India, Brazil and elsewhere. Liberty Seguros of Brazil, for example, was the official insurance provider for the 2014 World Cup, and the group also has a major presence in other sports including as sponsor of the US Olympics team, US soccer and US rowing. Total revenues in 2016 were $38.3bn, while net income almost doubled to $1.0bn. Private passenger auto insurance is the group's biggest line, accounting for just over a third of premium income. It was established in Massachusetts in 1912, adopting the current name five years later. During the 1990s the company built up a national and also international presence with a series of acquisitions. One of the most significant was smaller rival Safeco, acquired in 2008, which continues to operate as a separate brand.
