The Wine Group is the world's third largest wine producer by volumes, though it operates primarily in the US. Core of the business is provided by low-cost boxed wine Franzia, the #1 brand by volumes in the US, shifting a total of 23m cases in 2015. However, the group is working hard to move beyond its value origins and move into higher-end markets. Other brands include mid-priced Almaden and Flipflop, launched in 2011 as a rival to Gallo's Barefoot, and now sold in cans as well as bottles. The group's biggest recent success has been with premium-priced Cupcake Vineyards, launched in 2009 and now one of the US top ten by sales. Super-premium Chloe Collection followed in 2013, and oddly named Save Me San Francisco. Imported brands include Chile's Corbett Canyon and Fish Eye from Australia. Combined volumes were around 53m cases in 2017. The Wine Group was formed in 1981 from the management buyout and merger of Franzia, Tribuno vermouth and kosher wine producer Mogen David, all previously owned by Coca-Cola Bottling of New York. Former Franzia president Art Ciocca became CEO. Later that decade Franzia pioneered the development of wine sold in lower-cost boxes rather than bottles. The group has expanded its portfolio through selected acquisitions, including Almaden and Paul Masson from rival Constellation in 2008. Brian Vos is CEO. Privately owned by investors, the company discloses no financial information, but revenues were around $1.2bn in 2013. Subscribers may access account assignments and contact information.
