The MediaShop is one of the dominant media agencies in South Africa - #2 by billings in 2015, but the biggest by clients, with a broad mixture of around 280 big names and smaller local brands. It was named Media Agency of the Year in the MOST survey of peer agencies for four consecutive years from 2012, and was AdFocus Media Agency of the Year for 2017. The agency has three offices, in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. First founded in 1988 by local adman Dick Reid, the agency has been associated for many years with the local office of FCB. It was acquired by that agency in the 1990s. The business was inherited by Interpublic following its acquisition of FCB, but the group reduced its shareholding after 2006 to just over 51%, making it an effective joint venture with long-serving CEO Harry Herber and a local empowerment ownership committee. Herber remains a director, though the business is run day-to-day by group managing director Chris Botha. Despite its association with Interpublic, MediaShop positions itself as an independent agency. The US group's Universal McCann and Initiative networks maintain a separate but smaller presence in South Africa. Subscribers may access account assignments and contact information.
